In the online landscape where cyber threats loom large, Uniswap founder Hayden Adams recently fell prey to Twitter hackers. His Twitter account was compromised on July 20, unleashing a threat to his 250,000 followers who often put their trust in his tweets.
The compromising of high-profile accounts such as that of Adams can prove highly detrimental. The authority vested in these accounts often engenders blind trust, enabling a swift spread of fraudulent links. This scenario was showcased recently when followers of Uniswap’s founder found dubious links being shared from his account.
Once the hackers had control of Adams’ account, they didn’t waste time and began posting a series of tweets with the intention to scam Adams’ community. In the tweets, they falsely claimed that the Permit 2 platform had been compromised due to a security flaw. To address the non-existent issue and secure their assets, users were encouraged to click on the fraudulent link provided.
As anticipated, the link was a trap set up to obtain personal information from users and, subsequently, their cryptocurrencies.
Word of the hack quickly spread within the community, and an alert was issued via the Telegram channel “Web3 Security Alert.” It wasn’t long before Hayden Adams reassured his followers, tweeting that he had regained control of his account. He further mentioned that a statement would follow soon, providing clarity about the circumstances leading to the hack.
Alarmingly, the hack wasn’t confined to Twitter alone. Adams reported that his MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet accounts were also compromised by the hackers.
In the realm of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, cyber attacks are, unfortunately, increasingly common as they offer lucrative prospects for hackers. Social platforms, especially Twitter, are witnessing a rise in such hacks and fraudulent links.
